SPACECRAFT MATERIALS SELECTOR EXPERT SYSTEM

Description:

The Spacecraft Materials Selector (SMS) knowledge base is a preliminary design tool that provides estimates of environmental exposures and/or materials performance for selected spacecraft materials.  Inputs may launch date, altitude, inclination, mission duration, and certain characteristics of the satellite motion.  Based on information provided, the SMS will predict environments for the mission, including quantitative estimates of exposure levels under certain conditions.  The SMS may also predict materials performance based on previous flight experience.  Changes in selected material properties for Kapton, metallized-FEP Teflon, and a variety of selected coatings, metals, and MLI blankets may be estimated.
